Proceeding from the report NokiaThreatIntelligenceReport, the number of infected smartphones in the first quarter of 2016 increased by 96%, accordingly, one out of every 120 smartphones has been infected with malware in April this year.
Following the simple tips for smartphone protection against viruses will help to avoid unpleasant situations, such as loss of personal data from the device, write-off of money from the bank account, tied to the account, spamming, and so on:
1) Do not install applications from dubious sources. Before downloading the application, read carefully the rating, description and user reviews (feedback). Avoid installation of applications of developers with the low scores. The “Top Developer” icon will allow secure downloading in Google Play.
2) Regularly update the operating system. For example, the latest version of Android is called ‘Marshmallow’ (version 6.0). It was launched in October 2015 and includes a number of security features to prevent virus infection. According to Statista, 32.5% of Android users are still using KitKat (version 4.4), which was released in late 2013.
3) Avoid unfamiliar public Wi-Fi networks. Do not allow your smartphone to connect to the available and unverified WI-FI network without your permission, since the device can connect to the network of intruders and send all personal and confidential data from your smartphone.
4) Do not click on links from unknown senders. Do not click on links in e-mail newsletters, push-notifications that require proceeding to the specific address or enter personally identifiable information without reading in detail the information in the attached letter or notification.
5) Install and regularly update the anti-virus program. Nokia Threat Intelligence Report confirms that 74% of all infections occur in the Android-devices. According to ESET, an international developer of antivirus software, in 2010 the ESET’s Virus Lab discovered three families of malicious software for Android, in 2013 their number reached 79. In 2015, each month ESET was detecting more than 200 new patterns of mobile threats.
